If you haven’t already done any research or had any experience with water filtration products, Brita and PUR are the big players on the market. They produce more filter jugs and tap filters than any other brand and have the best reputation on the market.

First, just who Are PUR and Brita?

PURresized - PUR vs Brita Water Filter Pitcher 2021 – Which is the Winner?

PUR, is American based company that has more than 30 years of experience in developing water treatment products, including household options like water filter pitchers, faucet-mounted, dispenser, and filters for Kenmore refrigerators. Their products are sold over 33 countries in the world.

Brita Log1o - PUR vs Brita Water Filter Pitcher 2021 – Which is the Winner?

Brita, is a German-based water filtration company that has been in the business since 1966.

Their product includes water filter pitchers, dispensers, faucet-mounted water filters, and filtered water bottles. Their business has expanded to 66 countries around the globe which is double that of PUR.

Both companies have caveated their products, stating that they do not PURIFY water and will only provide a certain level of filtering on tap water contaminants.

So, how to choose between the PUR vs Brita pitcher models?

The Criteria For Comparison

We need to look at a number of different comparison points to establish the benefits of each one - starting with practical stats like number of cups they can produce, how long the filters last for, how quickly the water is filtered and drinkable, if there is a digital display etc. Then we can move into other factors like appearance, cost, how it pours etc. The idea is to compare and then let you make your own mind up.

ROUND 1 - Which pitcher costs least?

Source: Pinterest

Both are well priced and usually cost no more than $30 from most sources, such as Amazon. The Brita replacement filters can be bought in a 6 pack typically for under $20, whereas the PUR filters come in a 4 pack for typically under $40, making the more expensive filter the PUR filter pitcher vs Brita.

CONCLUSION: Brita wins.

ROUND 2 - Which pitcher’s filter lasts longest?

This of course depends on how much water you are likely to be drinking. PUR states that it should last about 3 months - however, if you drink the recommended daily amount of water, it tends to be closer to half of that time.

Brita suggests theirs to be replaced every 2 months, and you do generally get 6-8 weeks even on a heavier usage.

CONCLUSION: PUR wins.

ROUND 3 - Which pitcher filters faster?

316759 200 - PUR vs Brita Water Filter Pitcher 2021 – Which is the Winner?

I found that the PUR filter generally took 2-3 fills of the reservoir to fill the jug - and it took between 45-60 minutes, depending on how clean the filter was. The Brita was very fast, taking approximately 10-15 minutes to fill.

CONCLUSION: Brita wins.

ROUND 4 - Which one holds the most water?

This round is a technical victory for the PUR pitcher vs Brita jug. The PUR pitcher holds up to 11 cups, whereas the Brita equivalent does up to 10.

That extra cup can make all the difference when you have a house of thirsty people! However, the speed of filtration is important too, so despite PUR holding the extra cup, the Brita can fill faster.

CONCLUSION: PUR wins.

ROUND 5 - Which one is heavier?

The PUR 11 cup pitcher weights 2.44kg when empty, compared with the 2.88kg of the Brita when empty. This round then is technically a victory for the PUR pitcher.

However, when the 2 are full with water, the PUR tends to leak a little and the lid is a little loose, whereas, the Brita tends to be more sturdy as a result of being a heavier build. This may not be ideal for those of us a little older.

CONCLUSION: PUR wins.

ROUND 6 - Which one is smaller?

When it comes to size, the PUR water filter pitcher vs Brita equivalent are very similar. They are: 11.25 v 11.94 inches in length, 6.75 v 7.38 inches in width and 10.63 v 17.56 inches in height respectively.

Basically, the Brita comes in a bit bigger in each 3 comparisons despite offering 1 cup less in the jug. The PUR will fit in your fridge door better.

CONCLUSION: PUR wins.

ROUND 7 - Does it have a display screen?

The PUR water filter pitcher has a good, yet basic, LED light display. This changes colour from green to red when the filter needs replacement. This is OK, however, it didn’t work very well and tended to go red even when I had only just changed the filter that day. Learn how to reset PUR water filter light here.

The Brita indicator comes in 2 separate styles, 1 version has a similar light setting but with 3 separate lights rather than different colours, and the other shows bars like your smartphone signal. Both work very well.

CONCLUSION: Brita wins.

ROUND 8 - Which pitcher has more color options?

I searched for a different option on both for what it’s worth as style can still be important! As it turns out, the PUR jug only seems to come in a clear, and white and blue coloring. The Brita comes in 4 options, black, white, red and green and clear.

The extra color options may not mean much to most, but I think it adds a nice element of customisation and personal choice - you can even try to match it up with your toaster or fridge.

CONCLUSION: Brita wins.

ROUND 9 - Which pitcher is sturdier?

This one would have been closer a few years ago, however, in recent years, it seems like PUR has struggled to keep it’s sturdiness going in the last couple of pitcher models.

Whilst Brita maintains it’s standards, it seems like a lot of PUR customers, including myself, found that the lid didn’t fit well, and the jug itself is quite easily cracked.

CONCLUSION: Brita wins.

ROUND 10 - Which pitcher’s battery lasts longer?

The PUR LED light screen battery tends to last around 2 years, the Brita one is listed by the company as lasting up to 5 years. Neither brand’s battery can be replaced. Based on this,

However, the Brita battery is a lithium battery, meaning the lid cannot be recycled as it is a toxic battery type. Therefore, the winner here is the PUR water filter pitcher vs Brita.

CONCLUSION: PUR wins.

ROUND 11 - Which pitcher filters more contaminants?

The Brita filter does filter out around “99% of all contaminants” according to their website. However, it doesn’t filter everything and of course, different parts of the world do have different contaminants and chemicals in the water.

The PUR filters more of the contaminants out, and even has a different type of filter that is specifically designed to filter out lead.

CONCLUSION: PUR wins.

ROUND 12 - Which pitcher’s filters are more widely available?

PUR filters can be found in most online stores like Amazon and via their own store. They are available in many convenience stores.

However, the Brita filters are available in bigger numbers (as mentioned above) and in a greater number of stores too, meaning wherever you live, you should find it easy to use either, but slightly easier to use and replace the Brita water filters.

CONCLUSION: Brita wins.

So, at the end of the 12 rounds, the scores on the judges’ scorecards are even. So, you can make your mind up from there, however, we all like to see an actual result, so here’s our deciding round:

ROUND 13 - The Decider - Which pitcher produced the best tasting water?

water yummy - PUR vs Brita Water Filter Pitcher 2021 – Which is the Winner?

Now this one is going to be completely down to individual opinions. As PUR filters more out, the taste of the water I felt became a little bland.

The Brita produces a very crisp, refreshing watery taste and I have started using my Brita water filter pitcher over my PUR one. Maybe this taste is because the Brita doesn’t quite filter out as many of the chemicals, and the ones that are left in there from my area adds something to the flavour.

Either way, CONCLUSION: Brita wins.

Verdict

So there you have it. In the court of my own personal opinion, I sway towards the Brita pitcher, due to the 2 largely being inseparable until it came to my personal preferences on taste.

Both are very, very good pitchers.

For the most part, both are reasonably price, easy to find replacement filters, sturdy, fridge-door sized and convenient.

Both filter out the majority of contaminants and both are easy to use.

Bottom line

Ultimately, there’s a lot of categories that each brand wins out in, it really depends on the importance you place on each category as to who should be your winner.

If you’re looking at cost, the upfront cost shouldn’t be as important as the ongoing cost - $30 for a pitcher but every 6 months it could be $50 for filters.

For me, the speed of the filtering, the taste, and the amount of contaminants filtered are my top 3 categories of personal importance. For others, it may be different.

Whilst researching for this review, besides drinking an exceptional amount of water, I also found a couple of useful video reviews, such as this one: PUR v Brita review.

Sometimes it’s good to read a review like mine, with a visual reference like this so that you can see what I mean.

To conclude, I think you should decide for yourself based on what I have presented. Whilst PUR is a very good filter, I prefer the general use, feel and taste of the Brita. I did grow up using Brita over PUR at my parents house, but I haven’t seen quite enough to convert me yet!
